Kazakhstan's currency market is transparent and well-protected: licensed exchange offices, video surveillance, NBK regulation. Public-facing exchange-office scams are almost unheard of. But overpaying on the exchange is easy. Sometimes that's a 1–2-tenge difference per dollar, sometimes it's a serious loss from a poor choice of location or timing.

We've put together 10 rules that work for any amount and any currency in Kazakhstan.

Rule 1. Open the rates table before every exchange

The single most common cause of overpaying is "walking into the nearest bank." Rates at different banks vary — sometimes by 1 tenge per dollar, sometimes by 5. On USD 1,000 that's a 1,000–5,000 tenge gap.

Time spent checking the live rates table — 1 minute. Savings — from hundreds of tenge to tens of thousands.

Rule 2. Don't mix up the "buy" and "sell" rates

The silliest mistake people lose money on is checking the "bank's sell rate" when they themselves want to sell currency. These are different scenarios:

  • You want to buy currency (dollars, for example) → you need the bank's sell rate. The lower, the better.
  • You want to sell currency (and receive tenge) → you need the bank's buy rate. The higher, the better.

These scenarios are separated in the widget — pick the right one.

Rule 3. Do the spread math

The spread is the difference between the buy and sell price. It's the bank's or exchange office's "margin." A normal spread is 2–6 tenge for USD, 5–10 for EUR, 0.3–1.5 for RUB, and 1.5–4 for CNY.

If an exchange office shows a spread noticeably wider than that, it's a bad offer. Keep looking.

Rule 4. Don't exchange large amounts at the airport

The airport rate is 1–3% worse than in the city. On USD 5,000 that's 15,000–30,000 tenge.

At the airport, exchange a maximum of USD 100–200 for initial expenses. The main exchange — in the city. More on airport exchange.

Rule 5. Don't trust rates from a search engine

Yandex and Google show rates from various sources, often stale. Bank rates update several times a day — what you saw in the morning in a search engine may no longer be in effect.

Always cross-check against live data — in a table with hourly updates, or directly at the bank.

Rule 6. For large amounts — call and negotiate

The table rate is the retail offer. For amounts of USD 5,000+, many banks can realistically offer a custom rate — 1–2 tenge better than the table rate.

Routine: call the head offices of 2–3 banks, discuss the amount and your target rate with the currency manager. Pick the best offer.

More on large transactions.

Rule 7. Only exchange at licensed locations

In Kazakhstan, currency operations are allowed only through licensed banks and authorized exchange offices. The NBK license must be visible on the signboard.

Never exchange:

  • With "private dealers" on the street
  • With strangers in messengers
  • At unofficial locations without a license
  • With "helpers" at the airport outside the designated points

It's both illegal and unsafe — you either lose money or get into trouble.

Rule 8. Check the bills on the spot

Don't walk away from the till until you've:

  • Counted every bill
  • Verified authenticity (security features — watermark, thread, color-shifting ink)
  • Made sure there are no damaged bills in what you received
  • Received a receipt or transaction slip

If something's off, sort it out on the spot. Once you leave the office, proving anything is hard.

Rule 9. Bring your ID for a large amount

For exchanges above 500,000 tenge equivalent (about USD 1,100), an ID document + IIN + address are mandatory.

Without an ID, the teller is required to refuse the operation. It's not nit-picking — it's an NBK requirement. Don't show up without an ID for a large amount — you'll waste your time.

More on documents.

Rule 10. Don't try to "time the market"

"I'll wait until morning, the rate will drop" is often a losing strategy. The rate is unpredictable and the market is volatile. The longer you put it off, the higher the chance you'll hit a bad day.

The best strategy:

  • If you need to exchange now — exchange now at the best current rate.
  • If you can wait — pick a good time by day of the week (Tuesday–Thursday morning is usually best).
  • If you're planning a large transaction — split it into 2–3 tranches across different days; that reduces risk.

Bonus rule: ask for the receipt

On any exchange in Kazakhstan, the bank or exchange office is required to issue a receipt, transaction slip, or formal record. The document shows:

  • The amount in both currencies
  • The exchange rate
  • The date and time
  • The exchange office's address
  • The license number

The receipt is your protection in case of a dispute. Don't forget to take it.

Pre-exchange checklist

  • opened the live rates table
  • picked the right scenario (buy/sell)
  • calculated the spread on the top offers
  • factored in address and logistics
  • if the amount is USD 5,000+ — called the bank and discussed the rate
  • if the amount is USD 1,000+ — brought your ID
  • heading to a licensed location (NBK license visible)
  • ready to check the bills on the spot
  • ready to take the receipt

Typical "loss" scenarios and how to avoid them

Scenario A: "I accidentally walked into the exchange office at my hotel"

Hotel exchange offices often have a rate that's 5–10% worse than average. Fix: exchange at any office 200 meters from the hotel — the rate will usually be better.

Scenario B: "I trust my bank, I always exchange there"

Today your bank may be at the top of the ranking; tomorrow, in the middle. Checking takes a minute. It's worth it.

Scenario C: "Exchanged at the first place I saw because I was in a hurry"

On small amounts that's tolerable; on large ones it's a loss of tens of thousands of tenge. If you really are in a hurry — hurry to the right place (open the table — see the best — drive).

Scenario D: "Exchanged with a private dealer at a 'great rate'"

Such deals often end either in counterfeit bills or trouble with the law. Always — licensed locations.

Scenario E: "Exchanged a damaged bill at a steep discount"

If they offer a discount of more than 10–15% on a bill, that's a violation of NBK rules. Better to send it for collection through a bank.

Safety: what to watch for

A licensed location should have:

  • Video surveillance
  • The NBK license on the signboard
  • The rate on a board (visible before the transaction)
  • A transaction register (the teller fills it in)
  • A receipt or slip after the transaction

Signs of a sketchy location:

  • No license signboard
  • No video surveillance
  • Rate "by arrangement," not on a board
  • Requests to "not show documents"
  • Offers of a "special-commission exchange"

Spot a single red flag — walk away.

Common mistakes

Exchanging without checking rates — the most widespread mistake. A minute of comparison saves a lot.

Agreeing to a "transaction fee" — in Kazakhstan there are no exchange fees. Only the spread.

Not recounting on the spot — tellers do make mistakes (rarely, but it happens). Better to count twice.

Breaking your last large bill into smaller ones for no reason — sometimes it's better to carry USD 100 as one note than as five twenties.

Ignoring a custom rate on a large amount — the table rate isn't the best one for serious operations.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I lose on a bad exchange? On USD 1,000 with a 5-tenge rate gap — 5,000 tenge. On USD 10,000 — 50,000 tenge. On large amounts, real money.

Is there exchange fraud in Kazakhstan? At licensed locations — no. At unofficial ones — counterfeit bills, shortchanging, and outright fraud are possible. Exchange only at licensed locations.

What do I do if I was shortchanged? Immediately — on the spot, without leaving the till. Afterward — file a complaint with the NBK and contact the branch manager.

Can I get my money back if I exchanged at a poor rate? If the transaction was voluntary — no. The rate was known in advance, so there's no claim.

Where do I report violations? To your regional NBK office. Contacts are on the nationalbank.kz website.

Do banks in Kazakhstan offer a discount on the rate for a large amount? Yes, on USD 5,000+ many banks are willing to provide a custom rate. Ask the manager.

Do they accept old or damaged bills in Kazakhstan? Yes, if the bills are fit for circulation. More on old bills.
