On weekdays in Almaty, all banks and currency exchange offices are open — you can walk into any of them and compare rates. On weekends the picture is different: a significant share of branches is closed, and not all of the ones that are open hold a good rate. On top of that, on Saturday and Sunday banks run a wider spread — they hedge against the non-working days.
This guide is about how to avoid losing money and time when a currency exchange can't be put off until Monday.
About 30–40% of bank branches in Almaty are open on Saturday — usually on a shortened schedule (until 2:00–4:00 p.m.). Major banks — Halyk Bank, Kaspi Bank, Bank CenterCredit, ForteBank, Bereke Bank, Freedom Bank — keep dedicated "Saturday" branches in the center and in large malls.
Chain exchange offices (MiG, Yes Exchange, Limpopo, S i K, Onika-Teko) run full hours, many of them 24/7. This is the most predictable weekend option.
Mall branches — Esentai Mall, Dostyk Plaza, Mega, Forum, Apple Mall — usually follow the mall's own schedule, meaning until 10:00 p.m. Rate — typically average.
Almaty airport — open as usual, no changes. Rate — the least favorable in the city.
Sunday is the trickiest day for exchanging currency. By bank:
Chain exchange offices operate as usual.
Mall branches — open on the mall's schedule.
The airport — no changes.
To see which bank you need is actually open on a weekend and what rate it's offering, it's easiest to check the table right away — with the bank name, the current rate, and the last update time.

The Saturday–Sunday rate in Almaty is usually less favorable than on weekdays. There are three reasons:
KASE is closed. Banks aren't receiving fresh exchange data, so quotes are set with a buffer — in case the market opens on Monday with a gap.
Fewer operators. Some banks are closed, and competition for the client weakens. The locations that are open can afford a slightly less favorable rate.
A wider spread. If the typical weekday USD spread is 2–6 tenge, on weekends it can be 4–8 tenge. For the euro — 6–12 tenge. For the ruble — 0.5–1.5 tenge.
On average, a weekend exchange "eats up" an extra 0.5–1.5% of the amount compared with a weekday.
An urgent everyday need. Guests arrive, you need to pay right away, you're paying cash in foreign currency for a tech repair — standard situations. Exchange only the minimum you need, leave the rest for Monday.
A weekend arrival. If you landed on a Saturday or Sunday — you need money for a taxi, hotel, and basic purchases. Change USD 100–200 for immediate needs, and leave the rest for a weekday.
A fixed-price weekend purchase. When payment is needed right now (you're picking up tickets, collecting an order), the loss on the rate is offset by the value of acting quickly.
A local holiday. If a long holiday weekend is coming up (Nauryz, Capital Day, etc.) and you need to buy currency before a trip — exchanging on Saturday can sometimes be more favorable than leaving it for the last working day, when the rate may jump.
Large amounts (USD 3,000 and up). Losses on the widened spread for large sums run to 10,000–30,000 tenge. That's a serious argument for waiting until Monday.
Yuan, pounds, yen, other less liquid currencies. On weekends only a limited number of locations handle them, and the spread is at its maximum.
Bills with defects. On weekends the tellers on duty usually have less authority to accept questionable bills. Better to go on a weekday to a major bank branch.
Without an urgent need. If you can wait until Monday — wait. You'll save.
In Almaty, the major central bank branches and mall locations are reliably open on weekends:
Halyk Bank: main branch on Al-Farabi Avenue, locations at Esentai Mall, Dostyk Plaza, Mega.
Kaspi Bank: terminal offices in malls and downtown. Most are open on Saturday until 4:00 p.m., on Sunday — only some.
Bank CenterCredit: large downtown offices, branches in Forum, Mega.
ForteBank: main downtown branches, locations in major malls.
Freedom Bank: a limited number of locations, mostly in malls.
Chain exchange offices MiG, Yes Exchange, Limpopo — reliably 24/7 at many points downtown and in the Bostandyk and Almaly districts.
Exact addresses and operating hours are in the rates table with live data.

Which banks in Almaty are open on Saturday? Selected large branches of Halyk, Kaspi, BCC, ForteBank, Bereke, Freedom are open, usually until 2:00–4:00 p.m. Full schedule — in the rates table above.
Which banks are open on Sunday? The list is noticeably shorter: locations in major malls of certain banks. If you need a guarantee — chain exchange offices are always open.
How does the weekend rate differ from the weekday one? The weekend spread is wider by 0.5–1.5%. For the dollar it's typically worse by 2–4 tenge, for the euro by 3–6 tenge.
Where can I exchange currency on Sunday in Almaty? In major malls (Mega, Esentai, Dostyk Plaza, Forum) — bank offices are open. In 24-hour chain exchange offices. At the airport. More on overnight and weekend options.
Is it worth exchanging currency on Friday evening? By Friday evening the rate is already starting to "price in" the weekend. The best time for large amounts is Tuesday–Thursday morning. More on when to exchange currency in Kazakhstan.
Can I exchange currency on the weekend without an ID? Up to 500,000 tenge equivalent — yes, though a document may be requested. Above that — required. On weekends the rules are the same as on weekdays.
What's better on Saturday — a bank or an exchange office? For the dollar — comparable. For less liquid currencies on weekends, exchange offices are often better than banks.
Exchanging currency on the weekend in Almaty is always a little more expensive than on weekdays. The spread is wider, the choice is narrower, and prices are less predictable. If you can wait until Monday — wait. If you can't — open the table above, pick the location with the best current rate and the most convenient address.
And remember: nighttime exchange and weekend exchange are always the price you pay for flexibility. Don't try to change a large amount on a Friday evening or a Sunday morning — it's almost always cheaper to wait.
